IN THE SIGN OF NIKOLA TESLA

The second evening of Fashion Week in our town, students from the fourth and the second year of the Academy of Applied Arts in the class of professor Doda Komad presented themselves to the Belgrade audience. Inspired by life and deed of Nikola Tesla they played with the form an design and performed one interesting performance dubbed Light. The patron of this performance was Belgrade City Hall. After that Iva Stefanović has presented her new collection Volume Shocking. Her impressions from this fashion event shares Dragana Kunjadić Capasa from Costume National.

“This is one exceptional venue. I am really pleasantly surprised and thrilled and I keep wondering what is this where we are. All is very worldly. The venue is very worthwhile and the right choice for interesting fashion events such as these ones we saw tonight. Performance was very nice. I am sorry I couldn't make connection between who did what among those six designers, that is students. There were some very interesting models and very interesting forms also. Optimistic, light, interesting, spontaneously relaxed. More than a positive impression. I would gladly take this in Italy with me. It's nice that performance was dedicated to Serbian genius Nikola Tesla. This is his year. We have plenty of creative and young people what we proved and tonight like we did who knows how many times before. I know a lot of them studying at renown Italian fashion schools and we never had a problem of creativity and uniqueness, that was something we always possessed. We are nation of the people who like to look nice and to be nicely dressed. But also, it is known that many funds are needed for a quality collection. And behind all that must be a production for the sake of commercialization. In a way that's the final goal of every single designer. And those final steps here in Serbia does not exist which is real shame. You have one talented and creative man who instead of working and making money stay at home languishing and staring at the ceiling. There are many factories here and I don't understand why young designers don't cooperate with them.
Iva Stefanović pleasantly surprised me. I like Iva and her creativity. I like that she is very authentic and on her own. She is very original in all she does. I am thrilled by tonight's fashion show since that whole Volume Shocking concept has its entirety, which was not the case before. Before it was just a bunch of ideas. Today you can see she gained maturity and confidence and this fashion show has clearly demonstrated that. There are plenty of details which I particularly liked. I like her play with materials, colors, forms. I think she is very creative. We also saw one woman/man collection which is something very difficult for a work and that's one reason more I like this. She has done this task excellently and I have to add I liked the footwear too. I spend one pretty interesting and nice evening here at Fashion Week and once again convinced myself that when it comes to organization everything functions smoothly. After all Costume National could experienced that by itself at Fashion Week few years ago. All is getting better and better and it has to be that way. I'll do my best to come again in October.

The second night of Fashion Week has ended in Andergraund club where Bojana Ilić has presented her spring/summer collection which she dubbed Mafia. Her impressions on this fashion show shares Jelena Veljković, costume designer. “Fashion is in constant change and one should not allow to be influenced by its trends. That was, it seems to me, motto of this fashion show and I liked it. It was medley and very colorful which is typical for Mafia at least when it comes to details. I like the choice of the venue for the fashion show. Very brave, specially the claim that  “Fashion, it's just Mafia”.

IMPRESSIONS

They Said About Performance Dubbed “The Light”

Ingrid Huljev, docent from the Faculty of Applied Arts

I have bristled. This is something fantastic. I am more than satisfied because out of all manifestations dedicated to Nikola Tesla I've seen so far this one is the most creative and the most quality tribute to Tesla. This was divine performance, modern ballet, in fact the union of all what is creative in art. A maximal juncture of students' creativity, the creativity of professor Doda Komad who lead them in this project and the excellent direction, choreography, stage ... I am speechless. This is something I haven't seen for so, so long at Fashion Week and that is fantastic. If we continue to follow that direction I think we won't have reasons to be somber and in bad mood. The future of these students is very uncertain but that's the reality. They educate themselves at this faculty in order to be able to overcome all those obstacles that are awaiting for them. It's not essentially different here compared to students of similar schools abroad. The situation is very similar. This is very demanding and difficult profession. An awful lot of people want to do this but very few of them are able to overcome all obstacles in order to achieve their own careers.

Nenad Radujević, general manager of Click Fashion Studio

I want to make a statement after the program like this since my heart is full now. There are some moments when I am very proud of myself and my team which execute this Fashion Week. These things mean the most to me, they charge my batteries to go on. That's how it looks like when someone give us a support, when they give us a full freedom to express ourselves in a creative way and show what we really are. Iva Milošević as a director, Boris Čakširan as a choreographer and of course, Doda Komad with her students, left an exquisite impression. I think that the essence of this Fashion Week is Light that is awaiting for us at the end of this, let's hope, short tunnel. I am sure that what we saw here tonight, our perception of Tesla 150 years later, will be also seen in some other world's metropoles. I will do my best for that.

Dragana Zeljković, the member of the City Council for the Culture
I am absolutely amazed since this is something I really believe in. These young people bear a new energy, new ideas, something completely unusual and no matter I am going to attend Fashion Week until its end I am quite sure this is my favorite. I am extremely proud that we established cooperation with Fashion Week in this way – when we were working out the plan for Belgrade Days we argued that it has to be something with artistic intentions, something with young people involved in, and this is exactly that. My impressions now are fantastic because everything turned to be perfect. We were not that interested in a commercial story but artistic one. It's great how good everything was – the choice of the venue, lights, people that took part in the performance and judging by reactions of the audience I would say this was first-class experience for all.

Jasna Dmitrijević, general manager of Sava Center

The students are brilliant. I know there are many their works unknown to public and I think they should be given an opportunity to show themselves within such thematic projects. As for this performance I have to say that never crossed my mind to think about Tesla in this way. Music for itself was excellent, costumes, choreographies, models and actors too. Since this is Tesla's year and since I know there will be many different projects dedicated to his jubilee now I can say that for the first time I had an opportunity to meditate about him in a different way within time frame of forty minutes: Tesla as a life, fashion, rhythm, tempo, and move in the most complex sense of it. After this performance I was thinking that I don't have to see anything else about him because tonight my needs for aesthetic, information, music, art, and dance are met.

Dijana Macura, the professor of contemporary fashion from the Faculty of Fine Arts
When I saw thrilled and happy people after the show the first thing that crossed my mind was how incredible the performance was. If Tesla could see it himself he would smile too, though that's not Tesla we know. All was so compact, the direction, organization, the whole topic easily went through all who took part in it, as they were one. I sensed the completeness in approach and the students were not the only ones who took part in it, we all did. I was carried away. It was fabulous.
As for the students I think every single one of them has found his/her own measure. Everyone was the part of the team, no one was specially distinguished but all were perfectly fitted. So this was one entirety which give its place to everyone to the certain limit. Only that way one shows how strong is and how deep he/she understood the topic. Every time you realize that you have to perform your job as a part of an entirety then you don't exaggerate but simply stress the strength of your own idea. Their task was to work together and they rightly realized how much they should be the part of the team and in turn how much should they keep their individualities. They also gave us an impulse to feel ourselves as part of this story.

Gordana Šarančić, art historian

It was one nice performance which showed to us that Light didn't come in an easy way. That choreography with periodically very sparkling movements was nice. Further, costumes are white and the white isn't color – white is light which was enriched by many fashion details in the form of fanlike applications, glittering belt, nice pelerine with the hood ... so through that we saw some details and something of the style which is en vogue now, as French would put it. As for the students themselves, I think there is a lot of cheerfulness in what they do and that they were more than happy during that creative process which occupied them. One can see entirety and joy which I felt mostly through costumes.

It's Fashion Week's tradition to make one fashion show in the form of performance and as for me, this is the height of all Fashion Weeks so far because Nenad Radujević has surpassed himself with this show. This is fashion performance, one ballet and stage miniature which would easily draw attention and in within context outside Fashion Week. Aside my fascination with the whole event I have to say that for me this is also fascinating in terms of fashion itself. What Doda did with her generation of students is worth of every praise. When I say this I mean on the fact that she didn't allow them to be fanciful about what is their view of the fashion but instead structured them completely within that white to white mold. So, they had white linen and white plush linen on their disposal and they made the maximum of it. Every construction, every model was a story for itself and the game of lights, dance, moves and excellent music only contributed to my conclusion that this is high art incorporated in fashion. This certainly should be standard for coming Fashion Weeks.

Ašok Murti, stylist

This time I am most impressed by models. I am thrilled by their contribution to this fashion show and anyone who claims that models are dolls is very wrong. That was proved tonight. Creativity and answer on the topic which was Light, is surely accomplished here. I like very much these kinds of concepts which have one element as a base – it was white color in this case. Through this events we come to discover some extremely talented people though talent is something I don't take for granted since it can be developed throughout life. Through the medium of Fashion Week they showed some interesting combinations and inspiring solutions which are really in the accord of the whole story, with no restrictions and with clear distance from all what is commercial. But the fact is once the lights of Fashion Week are off and they finish the school, you can't find them anywhere. It is irresponsible not to prepare such talents for the life.

My impression is fantastic. This fashion show had all elements of one very nice multimedia event. I liked the humor in approach and, as it seems to me, a very subtle parody on fashion show, though not in a sense of violent humor. Bell alike ballerinas bring models who are actually dolls ... This performance is bringing the concept of fashion show to the higher artistic level, something like ground for a possible multimedial artistic expression.

Miša Obradović, fashion photographer

Models are great though not that much trendy and targeted. One can see creativity and talent and above all I have to praise the performance as an entirety. I think fashion should be presented in this way more often. Iva Milošević has done her job perfectly. Models too and I liked all very much.

Milica Cukić, art historian

I liked the fashion show very much because it's unusual, witty, picturesque and it has an ironic distance toward fashion shows as manifestations. Exceptional juncture of choreography, costumes, lights ... Real artistic experience and also perfect when compared to ready to made fashion we are used to!

They Said About Iva Stefanović's Fashion Show

Leontina Vukomanović, singer

I liked the patterns at the T-shirts, especially the wings since it is somehow in the spirit of my latest song so I would like to have such a piece for myself. I only missed Iva's lucidity. It used to be all tumultuous before, somehow it's all calmed down now. I also missed the uniting thread to make all this an entirety.

Snežana Stojković, fashion editor of Glorija magazine

Iva has presented a youthful, trendy collection which can be seen on the streets and which is acceptable for young girls. This was one nice collection for summer days, at least that's how I saw it. Trends were followed though a bit mixed when it comes to the concept, but all is very joyful and it left a good impression.

Tanja Stevanović, PR of Madlenianum Chamber Opera

First of all, I have noticed some new model faces and I recognized at least one among them as a future star. I follow the work of Iva Stefanović from the very beginning. This time she brough a fresh air in our Belgrade and I hope this spring and summer Belgrade girls and those who decided to be girls will have will and courage to wear some of Iva Stefanović's models. I saw a few items I would gladly wear myself.

Antonija Mandić, RTL reporter form Zagreb
I am not impressed. It seems to me there were many things here but the designer didn't have a concept how all this should look like. I don't like that men were of secondary importance, dressed in sweat suits while women were dressed in some sexy corsets and skirts. I didn't wish to buy anything but if you separate items these completes are made of than maybe you could single out few of them.

Peđa Govedarica, stylist

I have expected more from Iva since she was so promising at the time she presented her first collection. Maybe my standards are bit disturbed since I live in New York and since I had opportunity to see how things look like there. I was confused tonight because it is not clear to me what exactly she wanted to show. This collection is not finished in the terms of concept, styles are mixed too much.

Sanja Džeba, designer for Yekoto French fashion company
Performance is something I see differently, not something that usually goes along fashion. I was also student of the Faculty of Applied Arts in Belgrade where I finished scenography and I also used to do costumes, so that theatrical approach is very appropriate to my temper. I like that even it is not typical for fashion. Students were great. I think it is good to enlist performances of this kind in Fashion Week program, specially when it comes from young people who demonstrated their ideas and creativity.
As for Iva Stefanović, it is something completely different from what I do and it is very difficult to judge another designer. But what she did certainly has its own place within local fashion map and it was done professionally. There are some items I really like, for example that little skirt which is something between shorts and skirt.

Jelena Gajšek, editor of Style TV show at Studio B TV channel

Iva Stefanović inspired by baroque, the lady who knits, crochets, embroiders, though this time someone else done it for her, presented voluminous collection and she didn't fail a bit. In her recognizable style Iva offered various items to men and women. Items that could be worn on their own but also in the combination with some stylings. I specially liked one brown skirt with slit in front and some creased stuff underneath it as well as dress which closed the fashion show. Men's models are very comfortable and I think every modern young man could find a good piece for himself and look very trendy in it.

Svetlost

Sandra Perović, RTS journalist
If it was film than one could say we saw mixed film when it comes to genres. Applying that movie terminology to fashion I would say that Iva Stefanović likes to make those genre mixes. For me the most eccentric model which easily could be worn by some movie star at some movie festival is the last pink dress with plastic roses. Iva is interesting because she makes unusual combinations of elegant skirts and teenage modeled T-shirts and tops. Let us mention and rich coloring free of conventions. It is obvious that she is free while creating and it seems that through her models she also invite us to free ourselves from restraints in dressing. Man's part of collection is focused on sport line and that is fine – one casual combination for the day or relaxed sport activities but to feel comfortable and nice at the same time. It is important for every author, no matter the field of work, to become recognizable and to create unique approach. I think Iva has confirmed that by this fashion show.

Aleksandra Perović, singer

I like experiments and I like some unconventional things, so I saw few such things at Iva's fashion show. Hairstyles were fabulous and they go well along clothing worn by girls. A few brown and black dresses look magnificent and I think girls can feel very sexy wearing them.

Tijana Bogosavljević, journalist, B92 TV channel

Collection is multicolored and joyful, very unbalanced and for some maybe even eccentric. Diversity of the models associates that girls can see themselves in various occasions wearing these models. I find it amusing that high school tone which pulls by men's stuff and some parts of women's too. The combination of corsets and some regular items is amusing also. Maybe for some very nice “girlie night out” styling.

They Said About Bojana Ilić's Fashion Show

Dejan Milosavljević,  Charles Jourdan Paris

First of all I like these kind of unconventional fashion shows venues. At the fashion show we have just seen one can see the school and work of the author and I specially liked a few man's models with interesting applications. I think there are many interesting ideas which could be developed further and maybe keep some commercial manner.

Aleksandar Đuričić, editor of Glorija magazine

This is ingenious, my best impression from this Fashion Week. I am very impressed by both, collection and the venue. I would like to have this kind of trousers and at least one jacket. Models are for summer and are beautiful for the beach, disco club, rave party. Inspiration by mafia I recognized in a plaster cast on the hand of one of the male models.

Svetlost Svetlost

Ana Miščević, RTL journalist from Zagreb
I have to say that I am harsh when it comes to critique since I am spoiled by fashion shows in New York and Paris. When you see those fashion shows abroad than you realize that fashion in this local frames lacks imagination and originality. As for this collection, when you think of mafia you immediately imagine some black, overmuscled guys which was not the case here. They are placed in this area here and they look different. The designer is very fanciful, the collection is full of colors and I think it allows a lot of combinations. The trends were followed except socks which are passe.

Danijela Stojanović Diridondica, designer of purses

This fashion show demonstrated something very important to me – nice things can contribute the quality of life. This is very multicolored and very likable to me since the multicolor is my favorite color. I like the things that don't leave you indifferent. I left the fashion show feeling happy. It was positive and charged by good energy.

Sandra Perović

Marija Srećković, athlete
I am kind of a woman who likes simple combinations when it comes to colors and cuts so I noticed some items which even I could boldy wear. Man's collection is even more interesting. Maybe we are not used to see men in Belgrade wearing this kind of stuff but all we have to do is to wait for nice weather to finally come and wear this clothing feeling great in it.
