FASHION IS IN FASHION

I am glad that Belgrade Fashion Week and Belgrade Design Week coincided. While design means sitting and thinking out something new, some beauty which will fascinate, real fashion is what you put on yourself and don't want to take it off anymore. It is not important at all is it something with two or three buttons, but that you simply want to have it. Those are the basic differences and I think it is very good that these two things mutually intertwine since it's a great union. Design can often be emotionally “flat” while fashion is more humane in its nature. It is important that people understand that they live here in Belgrade and that there is an audience here for what they create. They should not have desire to be someone else. The point is they should try to be authentic and to work for their customers. Even designers such as Galliano do not dress the whole world. They dress 20 very rich people and in addition few thousands of others and that's it. In general, there are few people that spend money nowadays. People don't want to spend money on clothing. There is an entire class of Belgrade intellectuals that wear black sweater, denim and similar things and I think it's great. After all, the personal style is all that matters, as well as attitude in life. After all you can't always fix yourself up and than walk out on the road paved with cobblestones and break hill. You must adjust to conditions. It's a classical paradox of our country. We don't have to think that things will change neither that somewhere else is much better. Everyone has its own problems.
Noone involved in fashion abroad can't believe that Belgrade has its own Fashion Week for ten years now. Moreover, Fashion Week used to take place even during war time. Nenad Radujević, art director of the project, has achieved that with his determination and that is something for respect. He didn't try to make Paris alike Fashion Week but to use possibilities at disposal. Manifestation is always well organized and I think things are moving forward. Design Week is something new. It will nicely attach to Fashion Week which already has its own history.

I am very proud that this year's Fashion Week coincided with Belgrade's Days manifestation, and moreover, this culturally tumultuous period was further contributed by Belgrade Design Week which had very successful premiere in this country. Design is one of the important branches that makes this modern and fast world more beautiful and more advanced, so it is very important to educate ourselves in that direction so that we can keep the track of the world's achievements in the domain of design and enjoy all that at the same time. The lectures kept by Karim Rashid or Konstantin Grčić are very important for our country, especially for those involved in design otherwise deprived from these valuable information. It is nice to see furniture collections by the most distinguished architects and industrial designers who widen new horizons when it comes to comfortability and culture of living. I hope these “interwined” weeks of design and fashion will continue their mission in this region, having in mind that Fashion Week has been contributing to the Belgrade's positive image for the years now.

We have talented designers. Aside the funding problem another problem is shortage of appropriate magazines for presentation of that fashion. As an editor I am very often in Milan, Paris, New York, where I watch up to 200 fashion shows so I am very informed when it comes to the style of designers in the world since I've been following their work for so long. I adore Serbian designers and if I get the dress which is unique and not the copy of some designer from abroad, I would gladly launch it, because I appreciate originality above all. As a fashion editor I follow the work of every designer from one season to another, so that I can see his/her development and changes. That's the most important. As for me I am willing to help as much as I can. I have already made editorials with Roksanda Ilinčić and Dragana Ognjenović, who I both love very much. It would be nice to keep the regular touch via some kind of press service, catalog or look book. Thus I would be able to know what is new in the work of our designers and what I can use of it in my work and help them about promotion. The problem is that sometimes I need some models the very same moment for the project I am working on. That's why the good communication is of essential importance. In that regard Click Fashion Studio is great partner since it's already very good when it comes to PR activities and the promotion of our fashion abroad.

The closing of 19th Fashion Week was rather unexpected and refreshing! Not as much as for absence of the “closing fashion show” which always draws great attention, as well as the question who will be honored with closing show – as for the new beginning which is interesting not only from designing point of view! Fashion Week, from one side and Belgrade Design Week from the other – though different in terms of “accumulated years of service” - are two manifestations which could, according what we saw, complement each other in the future. And also merge. Dragana Ognjenović's exhibition «Pop up», where she presented her fashion aesthetic in an almost pure artistic way, and specially arranged Ruška Bergman's photo-session and exhibition Ghost project & Mixer, have pointed out how much fashion, design and photography are inseparable nowadays.
Not less important fact, at least for me, is that the first encounter of BFW and BDW have taken place on Sava river banks in a new, excellent used venues which can become the core of some future Belgrade's artistic-designing quarter. Multi functionality, architectonic attributes and unusual environment of the Concrete Hall at Sava's pier have, as it seems, potential to initiate something like that. After all, smart cities around world have left their ex warehouses, forgotten halls and hangers to the professionals from artistic-designing-fashion world long time ago. Am I wrong?

My general impression is that Fashion Week was successful. I specially liked collections and presentations of Nataša Šarić and Darko Kostić. Nataša keeps her fashion story consistently: this time geometry and the play of black and white was really interesting, the real refreshment and one excellent stage collection. From the other side Darko Kostić has presented the woman in her the most feminine edition. Ballet as an inspiration, white color which is “a must” this season and hand made lace are really solemn and also very stage in their effect. The students from Academy of Applied Arts and Academy of Fine Arts were great too.
The organization was without any omissions. I think that both, participants as well as audience were satisfied, which proves that Fashion Week has successfully presented trends and the work of domestic designers once again. It only remains that what we have seen at catwalks move to the streets this spring and summer.
This year's link between Fashion Week and Design Week is important for entire fashion and design scene. That kind of permeation is very common nowadays. We can learn a lot from each other and also make many quality things through mutual cooperation. I hope that these two events will result in one beautiful and lasting tradition.

I liked the Fashion Week in general. It is obvious that designers have worked hard on their imagination since there were not many ready-to-wear collections. I like that everything is very fanciful and that people here know how to play with fashion. Good imagination is the first and the most important step leading to author's sign, recognizability and fame. I think that the best dressed person in Serbia next year will be the one who picks one item from every designer among those who took part in this Fashion Week. All praise to organizers who have done a perfect job. Fashion Week looked excellent and all was on a very high level. Maybe none fashion week from this region could be compared to those in Milan, Paris and New York, but Belgrade Fashion Week has demonstrated that Serbian designers are on the good and safe road to become literally WOW in Europe and even out of Europe.

That Fashion Week took place at the same time as Design Week is great thing. I think these two realms come along each other perfectly well. Maybe for the Belgrade which is always eager for events is a bit too much to have two major events in the same time, but again, one could feel a spirit of beauty and openness toward world during past week. I think it's a big accomplishment that every single one of us managed to stay alive and well these last ten years let alone that this manifestation mobilizes and keeps positive energy of such a great number of people. Therefore: BRAVO!

This was one of more successful Fashion Weeks. The opening was on a high level and it is excellent that at the very beginning the world trends were presented. That could be educative for young people who follow trends anyway. Thus is demonstrated that everyone can find something according individual needs and sense for style and that they don't have to be similar to each other, like an army. The students were real refreshment. Their fashion show, initial thinking about fashion and skills – all were demonstrated in a special way. Nataša Šarić has nicely presented her investigation in the fashion and it is good that Vesna Matijević left the clich? she was forced on in a big company and made her own brand. I hope she will find a way to maintain it in these conditions.

From recently ended Fashion Week my greatest impression is Light performance. For me it was something beyond fashion itself and I think that entire work on the performance is the real essence in dedication to art and fashion. That's why I think it's a direction which attached programs must take as much as possible. At the end I have to add how eagerly I expect the 20th Fashion Week.
